Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be a distressing condition causing symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, wind, diarrhoea and constipation. The symptoms can be continual or intermittent and are a bit different for each person with the condition.
If you suspect you have irritable bowel syndrome, it is important to seek medical advice to make sure your symptoms are not caused by any other illness.
The cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome is unknown, but environmental factors such as changes of routine, emotional stress, infection and diet can trigger an attack. As with the symptoms, triggers for IBS are very individual. A few of the common dietary triggers are caffeine, alcohol, and fatty or spicy foods. Where bloating is a major problem, an intolerance to fructose and fructans in certain foods can be at fault.
If you suspect that diet plays a role in your IBS, our Dietians at The Nutrition Specialists can assist with identifying these and planning a healthy and enjoyable diet to avoid the culprits.
