Mild spread to keep happy little Vegemites healthier
The West Australia (17-02-11)
Those happy little Vegemites can now eat a milder version of Australias iconic food spread. The household favourite for toast and sandwiches has lost half its salt to make a healthier version for children hat still puts a rose on every cheek.
Kraft has launched My First Vegemite which, it says, has 50 per cent less sodium, more and iron and vitamins, less sugar and a milder taste.
While many Australians have grown up on the tar-like spread, which contains yeast extract, its often described by puzzled foreigners as a salty, soy-like paste that is largely inedible.
Dietitians Association of Australia WA spokeswoman Margaret hays welcomed the move. "But we also recommend that people consider foods that have less sodium again, like avocado on toast, or cheese and tomato on toast," she said.
